Convos with NGINX behind Cloudflare with Flexible SSL setting
My goal was to use docker-compose and install Convos, then place it behind NGINX and Cloudflare, with the purpose of benefiting from Cloudflare's protection. I quickly ran into a very peculiar problem due to me using Cloudflare's Flexible SSL/TLS setting.
How we integrated Convos with Portal using Traefik (and how to configure Traefik for proxy authentication)
With Portal, we are building a platform that allows even non-technical people to benefit from the perks of selfhosting one's own services: ownership and sovereignty and the freedom to install any application you want. Obviously, if everyone should be able to use it, super simple UX is key. Portal must not feel like selfhosting but like a turnkey private space that just works. And the same is true for apps: after a one-click installation from the app store, you must be able to simply open the app and start using it.
Convos just got more modern
It's been about a year since the v6.00 release and since we decided to bump the Perl version, and break some internal APIs, I thought it was a good opportunity to bump the major version to v.7.00.
Using Plugins with Convos
This post simply goes over the setup to extend convo's features using plugins. It uses uses the example of the Paste plugin recently updated to make pasting into convos use the excellent ix.io to upload the paste in replace the irc message by a link to the content that was just sent to the paste site.
How to connect to Libera.chat from DigitalOcean
Moving to DigitalOcean was quite painless for most of the users, since they had already made an account on the libera.chat server. Unfortunately, the Convos bot and I had not set up our accounts properly.
How to move Convos to a new server
We had to move Convos to DigitalOcean, since the old server had disk issues. Moving Convos was not too hard, but there were some issues getting connected to libera.chat afterwards.
Convos has moved to irc.libera.chat
The #convos channel has moved to irc.libera.chat. You might still see people in the #convos channel on freenode, but that will hopefully soon change.
Convos solves IRC's persistence problem
When I first used IRC, back in the old days of mid-2020, I was shocked and disappointed by the lack of features in IRC that I consider essential for any messaging protocol—such as persistent sessions and conversation store. I was born in the boom of the Internet, when tons of fancy proprietary IM platforms, such as Windows Live Messenger and Facebook, were already popular, so I grew up with features made popular by these platforms.

Theming support in Convos 4.00
Convos 4.00 made it a lot simpler to define custom themes. Previously you had to modify the source code and build your own version of Convos. This process was way to complicated and unnecessarily.

Convos is more user-friendly than ever
Convos has always been about making the most user-friendly chat interface for IRC networks. We wanted to create the easiest user interface to keep in touch with our friends and fellow open source developers. Focusing on the chat experience is still the main focus, but we also see that it is important for our users to be able to tweak settings in a convenient way. Convos 2.00 addresses some of these needs.

Convos got a built in pastebin
Convos has a high focus on privacy. Convos can be run on closed network, and no external resources on the public internet should ever be needed. This ideas was also taken into consideration when we decided bundle a pastebin with Convos. The pastebin implementation stores the data in CONVOS_HOME, meaning you are in full control of the data shared.
